I love smoothies for breakfast – they’re quick, easy, and can be packed full of nutrition and flavour.  They are, however, not as much fun in the winter.  A cold breakfast on a cold morning usually doesn’t do it for me.  Especially when the sun doesn’t show its face until 8 am (if at all).  This smoothie is the perfect combination of spicy and sweet.  It has just enough heat to make a cold breakfast on a dark morning a good thing.  Besides, who doesn’t love chocolate for breakfast?

Spiced Chocolate Smoothie

Naturally sweetened with banana, this smoothie is high in fibre and protein, making it great for breakfast on the go.  Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne bring a warming quality to the chocolate flavour.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup unsweetened milk (regular or soy)
  • 1 medium banana
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao or best-quality unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch ground nutmeg
  • pinch ground cayenne

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
